Screen Testing

Screen testing for Drugs is conducted using Urine testing devices.
Urine testing is conducted using verified screening devices which comply with Standard AS/NZS 4308:2008.
On the indication of the possible presence of a drug (not-negative or non-negative) the sample can be sent to an IANZ accredited laboratory, such as ESR or Canterbury Health, for confirmation testing.
Donors have the right to request testing of the referee specimen and a medical review of laboratory results.
Alcohol testing is conducted using a breath testing device compliant to AS 3547:1997.

Urine Screening Devices

Onsite Screen testing of staff is a cost effective and instant method of testing.

Micro Screen Urine Drug Test Cup is used for general screening. Micro screen test cup is verified to Standard AS/NZS 4308:2008. The cups have six panels for screening the common drugs of abuse.

The Micro Screen™ urine testing cup provides preliminary testing for six drugs of abuse:

  • Amphetamines
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates
  • Cannabis
  • Methamphetamines

Unlike other devices, the donor does not need to handle the testing panel component of the Micro Screen test, significantly reducing the potential risk for tampering. The Micro Screen test also features in-built temperature and adulteration panels to provide an indication of sample tampering.

Other urine screening devices are available upon request.

Micro Screen™ urine drug testing kits are manufactured in the USA and comply with Australian Standard (AS/NZS4308:2008). They use quality components to greatly reduce the potential for false positives and false negatives.

 

ALCOHOL BREATH TESTING

All of our contractors use up to date certified alcohol breathalysers which are calibrated 6 monthly according to legal requirements.

Your Company’s Legal Responsibility

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 comes into force on 4th April, 2016.

These new regulations state that persons conducting a business have duties to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the workplace is without risks to the health and safety of any person.

An employee under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol is a risk to persons in and around the workplace.

Our drug testing services include:

  • Assistance within the implementation of Drug & Alcohol Policies
  • Training and Education of management and staff
  • Drug Testing onsite in accordance with AS/NZS4308 using verified testing devices and Collectors qualified with NZQA 25511 and 25458
  • Confirmation of indicative drug results from Canterbury Health Lab (CHL). All workplace drug testing conducted by CHL follows AS/NZS 4308:2008 standard.

Drug and Alcohol Policies

We are able to assist companies to prepare and implement a comprehensive Drug and Alcohol Policy. Employment Agreements and Policies work is done for us by a third party. Training and education from this third party is also available..

Types of Drugs Tested

The classes of drugs usually tested for in a standard workplace test are Amphetamines, Methamphetamine, Cannabis, Cocaine, Opiates and Benzodiazepines. Other types of drugs can be tested for such as synthetic cannabis.
Canterbury Health, at an extra cost, can screen for other classes of Drugs on request.

Drug Testing Programs

Once a Drug and Alcohol Policy is in place, we recommend implementing a Drug Testing programme where all employees are tested on a random ANNUAL basis.

The policy should include Pre-employment, Post Incident, Random and Reasonable Cause Testing.

Rehabilitation.

Drug Detection Services Ltd believes the most important aspect of Drug and Alcohol screening in the workplace is rehabilitation. It is our company’s position that drug detection will never work without rehabilitation.

We have a very good relationship with all local DHB drug and alcohol services and this services is free of charge.

Workplace Drug and Alcohol Policy                           

Drug Detection Services can advise companies and employers on the creation of workplace drug and alcohol policies and also the required clauses, and the correct wording of, that are needed to freely and legally preform drug testing on all employees.

We work closely and engage the advice of Sue Nolan MSc. (Hons), MNZIC, PG.Dip.Bus and level 4, National Certificate of Adult Education.

Sue Nolan has been both a forensic scientist and regular expert witness for 35+ years specializing in illicit drugs and toxicology. Initial employment was with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) which became the Institute of Environmental Science and Research Ltd (ESR), a Crown Research Institute (CRI).

Since 1992 Sue has advised over 1,500 companies on Drug Free Workplace Programmes, regularly published in her disciplines and presented papers at New Zealand and overseas conferences. She has gained a significant international reputation.

Sue is a board member of IFDAT (International Forum for Drug and Alcohol Testing) and was included as a member of the Independent Observer Team for The World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. The Team audited the entire Drug Testing process at those events. Sue remains an advisor to WADA on their assessment of research proposals.
