Manawatū Regional Economic Update

A white background with a few lines on it

The Manawatū Business Chamber and CEDA invite you to another engaging panel discussion and Q&A as we explore the region’s economic outlook. With an uncertain start to 2026, the focus for this event will be on the resilience of the Manawatū economy during volatile times.

In collaboration with Palmerston North City Council, and Manawatū District Council, and with the support of CR Law, this event will provide fresh insights into the opportunities and challenges facing the Manawatū economy in 2026.

Facilitated by MC Felicia Mackenzie-Aull from CEDA, the evening will kick off with an economic overview from Stacey Andrews, City Economist at Palmerston North City Council, followed by a thought-provoking panel featuring:

  • James Stewart, Managing Director, Stewart Dairylands

  • Andrew McLean, Investment Advisor, Craigs Investment Partners

  • Mathew Hardie, General Manager, Carousel Confectionery

  • Stacey Andrews, City Economist, Palmerston North City Council

The Manawatū and wider New Zealand economy entered 2026 with clear signs of recovery. Economic activity strengthened, labour market indicators improved, and business conditions began to stabilise following a prolonged period of volatility.

However, this momentum has been tempered by renewed global uncertainty. Conflict in the Middle East has disrupted supply chains and lifted fuel and fertiliser costs, placing upward pressure on inflation and adding complexity for households and businesses.

It’s clear that global events continue to strongly influence our local economy and the anticipated improvement in economic activity is now likely to emerge later than first expected.

Despite this, the fundamentals of the Manawatū economy remain strong. New Zealand’s global position, combined with growing international investor interest, and local economic strengths, continues to support confidence in the region’s outlook.

Gain insights into what’s driving the Manawatū’s economy and what lies ahead for local businesses.
